Brooklyn is a borough in new York City. It is home to 2.5 million residents, making it the city's most populated borough. Prior to 1898, Brooklyn was an independent city until its consolidation with New York City. To this date, it maintains a distinct culture, thriving arts scene, and intriquing architectural layout.
The first half of the nineteenth century saw significant growth along the economically-strategic East River waterfront, across from New York City. In 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was completed, no longer requiring residents to take a boat trip to Manhattan. A referendum in 1894 by Brooklyn residents voted to join with Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, and Richmond (later Staten Island) to become the five boroughs of New York City as we know it today.
Today, Brooklyn is the third largest business district in New York City, while over half of the borough's population work outside of Brooklyn itself, in Manhattan and elsewhere. It possesses a thriving arts scene, and has a rich cultural heritage.
